You know those times that you recognize someone/somebody but you just can't figure out why?
That flashback
going through memories, faces, places
all because one of our senses picked up something familiar.
When children get lost the look on their face is scared and they start looking at all the faces all around them
looking for that familiar face of their Mother.
The one that they know unlike any other.
The voice that soothed them to sleep.
We all have those.
We know the voice of our family members
our friends
our beloved ones.
I had one of these crazy moments when you face goes blank
as your mind is racing trying to put that familiarity to a face, a memory.
An older guy and his grandson came into Parks Sportsman the other night
definitely not out of the ordinary.
As I asked him how he was and he answered, my mind immediately recognized the voice.
He had sunglasses on so I couldn't make out the face into something familiar
but the voice struck something in my brain
and off it went as it went through trying to find a face.
Then it finally hit me.
JEFFERY R. HOLLAND
of the twelve apostles.
He was in little ole' Parks Sportsman on a friday night.
When he came back up to purchase his items it took me quite a while to work up the courage to say this:
Me: "Can I ask you a question?"
"Well, sure."
Me: "Can I shake your hand?"
"Of course! How did you recognize me? I have my sunglasses on."
Me: "I recognized your voice."
We talked for a little bit more but as that has been on my mind the past little while
meeting a church authority is kinda a BIG DEAL.
I've been thinking how crazy it is how our minds can do that.
Memorize to an exactness a small thing as someones voice.
How amazing our senses are.
Did you ever notice how we pick up little mannerisms from the people around us?
But more importantly I've been thinking on a more serious, spiritual note.
How will I recognize Him?
I can't remember what He looks like
what His voice sounds like
how He walks, etc.
So that's something I'm working on.
Getting to know my Savior better.
Standing in the presence of a general authority is a great experience
being able to go stand in a dedicated Temple is a blessing
but being able to be in His presence is my ultimate goal.

I love this post! I am definitely jealous that you met Jeffery R. Holland. that is a BIG DEAL. Who would have thought that they actually do normal things like go to a sports store!!
